Perseids

This coming week sees the peak viewing time during the Earth's annual trip through the Perseid Meteor Shower. In fact, the highest rate of meteor sitings is expected to occur starting at 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 12th, until the approach of dawn the next morning.

The complete period of meteor activity runs from about July 17th till about August 24th. Because the peak viewing day is often close to the Feast of St. Lawrence, who was martyred on August 10th, the shower is sometime called "The Tears of St. Lawrence."* Consider the beautiful reflection and reading that fisheaters.com has prepared for such a viewing.

*notwithstanding the good-humored and non-tearful way in which the saint met his death ... and became a patron saint of barbecue ...

A county-sponsored viewing will occur overnight Thursday at Independence Lake County Park.

In the alternative, some GenChristers will be getting together Friday night to view them in an appropriate place, possibly the one described below. Facebook

Statewide Young Adult Pilgrimage

Join young adults from all over the state for a walk of prayer for Christian Culture. Fr. Mathias will celebrate the opening Mass for us at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the De Sales Center. Fr. Paul Ward will celebrate the Saturday morning Extraordinary Form Mass at 8:00 a.m.

Come for part of a day or the whole thing. Walk an hour or camp over night. Send any question to Paul.

As mention above, the Friday night of the pilgrimage is expected to be the second best night for watching the Perseids this year. To that end, some pilgrims may stay up late or wake up in the dark hours of the night for ideal viewing, at our camping site in the 'wilds' east of Jackson.

GenChrist Notes

Pope Benedict's Prayer Intentions

Each month, Pope Benedict XVI announces his special prayer intentions--particular things that he wishes all Catholics to pray for that month. (When, for instance, we pray the rosary and say the prayers at the end for the intentions of the Holy Father, these are the intentions for which we're praying.) Pope Benedict offers two intentions every month, one general, and one for a particular Catholic missionary activity.

His general prayer intention for August 2010 is "That those who are without work or homes or who are otherwise in serious need may find understanding and welcome, as well as concrete help in overcoming their difficulties."
v Pope Benedict's mission intention is "That the Church may be a 'home' for all people, ready to open its doors to any who are suffering from racial or religious discrimination, hunger, or wars forcing them to emigrate to other countries."

Atomic bombing anniversary
As some news sources are noting, not only is today the commemoration of when Jesus was transfigured and shown bright as the sun and whiter than snow, it is also the 65th anniversary of the American atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, when man first lit up the sky like the sun in an attack upon his fellow men.

This recent and interesting new story concerns certain Jesuits who seem to have been protected from some effects of the atomic blast: The priests who survived the atomic bomb

Three days after "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima, "Fat Man" was dropped on Nagasaki, a non-militarized target and the historic center of Catholicism in Japan from the time that St. Francis Xavier first visited the islands in 1549. A related story from homiletic and pastoral review: The Catholic Holocaust of Nagasaki—“Why, Lord?”

Today, for the first time, an ambassador of our government has attended the annual ceremony commemorating the bombing: Asia News story.

If you find the time, consider praying a prayer for any of our brothers and sisters from Hiroshima and Nagasaki who may still be in Purgatory.
