Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, the forty day period before Easter when Catholics practice particular penances and mortifications so as to follow the example of Jesus Christ and his forty day fast, in preparation for the triumph of the Resurrection, when he conquered death. (Sundays of Lent are not counted toward the forty days.)

Ash Wednesday is a particular day of the year for being reminded of and contemplating our mortality. At Masses celebrated according to the Missal of Pope Paul VI (1970), the dispenser of ashes will say either 'Remember that you are dust and to dust you will return' and 'Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.' At Masses according to the Missal of Pope John XXIII (1962), the priest or deacon will say 'Meménto, homo, quia pulvis es, et in púlverem revertéris' ('Remember, man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return.'). Each of these blessings recalls the third chapter of Genesis and the curse of death that man chose by sinning.

Recalling the truth of our mortality is one of the principles behind the use of ashes on the forehead this day: to remind us that we are mortal, subject to rot and decay (though many try to euphemize death away), and that we are radically dependent on -- solely dependent on -- Jesus Christ to overcome this fate.

Ash Wednesday is a day of universal fast and abstinence for members of the Catholic Church and certain other Christian denominations. 'Fasting' means that a person must reduce the amount of food eaten from normal and has been defined as one regular meal and two smaller meals (with no snacking in between). 'Abstinence' means that a person does not eat meat from land animals. The Church encourages Catholics to take on the hardest penances that they can bear - fast and abstinence, may be easy for some, and should be seen as a minimum. Fasting is not binding on the old (over 60) or young (under 18), nor on the ill or frail, or on pregnant or nursing women.

For all the reasons above, all of the Catholic Churches in Ann Arbor will be hosting Masses this day at which blessed ashes will be distributed. Click the link below to see the Masses scheduled in our area.

A2CT: Doubt

A work perhaps partially inspired by the "Long Lent" of 2002, John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning drama concerns a Bronx Catholic grade school principal, Sister Aloysius, who suspects that the parish priest has behaved improperly with a young African American boy in the school.

Scythian @ The Ark

Scythian finally plays Ann Arbor on the weekend - The night after St. Patrick's Day!

Scythian belts out a high-energy, adrenaline-peddling, interactive brand of music with one goal in mind: to get people on their feet and dancing! These classically trained musicians are natural showmen who seamlessly blend kicked-up Celtic, folk and world music, and deliver it with a punk-rock sensibility. In a single show, they transport an audience across the globe with the alluring and dramatic strains of gypsy fiddles, the bounce of a Celtic reel, and then cross back over the border to pick up a klezmer hook and some good old-fashioned bluegrass licks.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.theark.org or by calling 734-763-TKTS. Get them early!

Of Gods and Men

Friday, April 1st, will likely see the Michigan debut of this film. Plans are being put in place for a trip to the Maple Art 3 (Bloomfield Hills) for the occasion.

Of Gods and Men (2nd Prize film at Cannes 2010) - Trailer - Theatrical summary: "In 1996 in the Algerian Mountains, caught between a military government and extremist guerrillas, a group of monks face the decision of their lives."
You can hear high praise of the film in Al Kresta's discussion with Steven Greydanus on 2/25/11: Podcast here (While Greydanus hasn't written extensively of the film yet, he recommends the review here)
At the time this update 'goes to print,' the only scheduled Michigan release will be in Bloomfield Hills on April 1st. (official website).

The show will be at either 7:00 p.m. or 7:40 p.m. Please let me know if you're interested in going. There is also the possibility of dinner and/or stations of the cross beforehand or afterward. Please let me know any preference you have as among those possibilities as well.

GenChrist Notes

Pope Benedict's Prayer Intentions
Each month, Pope Benedict XVI announces his special prayer intentions--particular things that he wishes all Catholics to pray for that month. (When, for instance, we pray the rosary and say the prayers at the end for the intentions of the Holy Father, these are the intentions for which we're praying.) Pope Benedict offers two intentions every month, one general, and one for a particular Catholic missionary activity.

His general prayer intention for March 2011 is "that the nations of Latin America may walk in fidelity to the Gospel and be bountiful in social justice and peace."

Pope Benedict's mission intention is "that the Holy Spirit may give light and strength to the Christian communities and the faithful who are persecuted or discriminated against because of the Gospel."
