The 13th Day - a film about the true story of Fatima

On October 13, 1917, God performed a spectacular miracle before tens of thousands of people who had gathered near Fatima, Portugal in response to visions of the Blessed Virgin that three young children had experienced in the five months prior. A new movie, The 13th Day, recounts those stories and that experience. A trailer can be seen on the film's website. FB site.

You can find the movie on Amazon, if you like, but the only remaining scheduled showings in our region will be today and tomorrow morning.

Special All Souls Day Mass - featuring the Church's treasury of sacred music

Monday, November 2, will be a special day of prayer for the Souls of the Faithful Departed at St. Josaphat Church, Detroit.

Starting at 6:00 PM, Tridentine Low Masses will be celebrated at the side altars of the church. In 2008, two side altars were in use. This year, Frs. Mark Borkowski, Peter Hrytsyk, John Johnson, and Louis Madey will be present to celebrate Masses at all four of the side altars. This may very well be the first time in decades that all of the side altars of one of our local historic Catholic churches are being used for Holy Mass simultaneously.

Following the Low Masses, at 7:00 PM a Solemn High Mass will be celebrated at the high altar. The Dies Irae - the beautiful Latin hymn concerning the final judgment which is prayed during some Requiem Masses - will be sung. The Black Vestments of Requiem Masses will be used. At the end of that Mass, the ceremony of Absolution will be conducted at the catafalque, the wooden platform which represents a casket for the departed souls.

The Church provides three separate sets of Mass Propers (prayers, psalms, etc.) in th 1962 Missal for All Souls Day, as there has been a longstanding tradition of priests celebrating multiple Masses on this day. The Church wishes to stress the need for prayer for the Souls in Purgatory, as, once a soul is in Purgatory, it can no longer pray for itself. The prayers and Masses offered for a soul by those still on Earth aid in its relief and its ultimate release from Purgatory.

Plenary Indulgence - Year of the Priest

Throughout the current Year of the Priest, it is possible to obtain a plenary indulgence on the first Thursday of each month.
"The Plenary Indulgence is granted to all the faithful who are truly repentant who, in church or in chapel, devoutly attend the divine Sacrifice of Mass and offer prayers to Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest, for the priests of the Church, and any other good work which they have done on that day, so that he may sanctify them and form them in accordance with His Heart, as long as they have made expiation for their sins through sacramental confession and prayed in accordance with the Supreme Pontiff's intentions."

Pope Benedict's Prayer Intentions

Each month, Pope Benedict XVI announces his special prayer intentions--particular things that he wishes all Catholics to pray for that month. (When, for instance, we pray the rosary and say the prayers at the end for the intentions of the Holy Father, these are the intentions for which we're praying.) Pope Benedict offers two intentions every month, one general, and one for a particular Catholic missionary activity.

His general prayer intention for November 2009 is "That all the men and women in the world, especially those who have responsibilities in the field of politics and economics, may never fail in their commitment to safeguard creation."

Pope Benedict's mission intention is "That believers in the different religions, through the testimony of their lives and fraternal dialogue, may clearly demonstrate that the name of God is a bearer of peace."
