Subject: From Fr. Bill Ashbaugh: Bread of Life Family Event

Dear St Thomas Parishioners,

I wanted to inform and invite you to a Catholic Family event that will happen this Saturday at the Bread of Life Residence in Ann Arbor.

For those who may not know what the Bread of Life Residence is-- it is a retreat house for either individuals, groups, or families that centers around our Lord Jesus who offers Himself to us all in the Eucharist.

4th Annual Catholic Family Day Bread of Life Retreat Residence, Ann Arbor
When : Saturday, July 31 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.!

Where: map

What is offered for families? Mass, Family Prayer, Picnic, Outside Reconciliation, Eucharistic Procession and Adoration

This is a wonderful summer event that starts with an outdoor Mass at 11 a.m., followed by a simple hot dog lunch, praise and worship music, the opportunity for the sacrament of Reconciliation out on the grounds, and lots of room for children to play. The day ends with a Eucharistic procession, a short time of adoration, and the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3 p.m. Fr. Dennis Brown of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary will be introducing the offering of spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius at the Bread of Life Retreat Residence at 4901 Dixboro Rd. in Ann Arbor. Come and enjoy this celebration on the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

There is a suggested donation for this family day retreat of $10 per person or $30 per family. Please call 734/332-9733 to register. Walk-ins welcome!

Totus Tuus visit to Ann Arbor

Since moving to Lansing, Fr. Jeff has helped coordinate a young adult Eucharistic adoration group that meets at our diocese's cathedral on Wednesday nights.

On Friday, August 6, 2010, members of that group will be visiting Ann Arbor for the first profession of some new Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, which will occur at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Church.

Following the consecration, those who attend may head to a pilgrimage site in the metro Detroit area (perhaps Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, or Fr Solanus Casey Center in downtown Detroit or Assumption Grotto in Detroit).

If you might like to attend the profession, rsvp to the sisters here; if you might like to meet and travel with the Totus Tuus members, contact Angela

Looking further ahead: Totus Tuus will be making a Labor Day weekend trip to Catholic Chicago. They'll most likely stay at St Mary of the Lake Seminary (Mundelein Seminary) in Chicago and go to several area churches as well as partake of some cultural activities in Chicago while we're there. Departing Friday, September 3 (or early Saturday morning on the 4th) and return Monday, September 6.

Pope Benedict's Prayer Intentions

Each month, Pope Benedict XVI announces his special prayer intentions--particular things that he wishes all Catholics to pray for that month. (When, for instance, we pray the rosary and say the prayers at the end for the intentions of the Holy Father, these are the intentions for which we're praying.) Pope Benedict offers two intentions every month, one general, and one for a particular Catholic missionary activity.

His general prayer intention for August 2010 is "That those who are without work or homes or who are otherwise in serious need may find understanding and welcome, as well as concrete help in overcoming their difficulties."
v Pope Benedict's mission intention is "That the Church may be a 'home' for all people, ready to open its doors to any who are suffering from racial or religious discrimination, hunger, or wars forcing them to emigrate to other countries."

Local Catholic composer: Daniel Knaggs

Daniel Knaggs - a concert composer, arranger, producer, and vocalist - recently won four out of the six prizes in the blindly-judged 2010 International Sacred Music Competition for Composers! As a result, his four works will see premieres at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C. in a concert to be held August 14, 2010. (fb)
