Good Friday

Greetings GenChrist,

Whatever else you do this weekend, keep in mind the fundamental message of Easter Sunday: that the risen Christ has won victory over the powers of darkness, of ignorance, of injustice, of untruth: "In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." (Jn 16:33) (h/t Phil Lawler)

Have a blessed day and Triduum! Congratulations to all who are joining the Church tomorrow night!

We will not be meeting this Sunday night but will reconvene on Sunday, April 11th. A schedule of Ann Arbor area liturgies is available here.

In Christ,
Paul Schultz

Easter Vigil

The Easter Vigil begins at 8:30 p.m. Seats may be difficult to come by after 8:10 p.m. So far as I know, volunteers are still being sought:

1) Setup for Parish Party

The Altar Rosary Society requests the assistance of six GenChristers in preparing the parish hall for the party that kicks off immediately after the Easter Vigil, for general celebration and welcoming new members into the Church.

Volunteers are asked to come to the parish hall at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night for setup. The Easter Vigil Mass commences at 8:30 p.m. and the Altar Rosary Society will reserve seats for anyone who helps (so you won't need to worry that you can't get a seat). There will also be a little clean-up to assist with when the party is over.

If you are able to volunteer, please email Rose Ann Yurko and carbon-copy Mark Meinhart

2) Ushers for Easter Vigil

Julie Mussio, St. Thomas Liturgy Coordinator, is looking for two ushers to serve at the Easter Vigil. Men of GenChrist - you may not get a seat but you will provide a valuable service to the Church on this night of nights and may serve as an important point of contact for someone coming to honor God for the first time.

If you are able to volunteer, please email Julie and carbon-copy me.

Church @ the University: Economies of Death and Salvation: German Jesuits in 17th-century Oceania

Prof. Ulrike Strasser
UM Eisenberg Instute for Historical Studies
Thursday, April 8th, 4 p.m.
Tisch Hall - 435 S. State
Free

Strictly speaking, this event is reported because it is one intersection of Church and university, though it is not known whether the content of the talk merits recommendation. Ulrike Strasser is an Associate Professor of History and an affiliate of Women’s Studies and Religious Studies at the University of California, Irvine.

Her monograph State of Virginity: Gender, Religion and Politics in an Early Modern Catholic State (University of Michigan Press, 2004) received the 2005 Book Award from the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women. Strasser’s current book project, Consuming Missions: German Jesuits on the Pacific Rim and the Politics of Colonial Imagination in the German Empire (17th-19th), explores the activities of German missionaries in the Pacific Rim and the ways their narratives from the colonial periphery informed the formation of identities in the metropoles of the Holy Roman Empire.

She has also been collaborating with Heidi Tinsman on a project to explore the relationship between studies of gender and sexuality, especially as they relate to masculinity and the growing field of world history.

Pope Benedict's Prayer Intentions

Each month, Pope Benedict XVI announces his special prayer intentions--particular things that he wishes all Catholics to pray for that month. (When, for instance, we pray the rosary and say the prayers at the end for the intentions of the Holy Father, these are the intentions for which we're praying.) Pope Benedict offers two intentions every month, one general, and one for a particular Catholic missionary activity.

His general prayerintention for April 2010 is "That every tendency to fundamentalism and extremism may be countered by constant respect, by tolerance and by dialogue among all believers."

Pope Benedict's mission intention is "That Christians persecuted for the sake of the Gospel may persevere, sustained by the Holy Spirit, in faithfully witnessing to the love of God for the entire human race."
