~ The Weekly Update ~
Friday of the Thirty-Third Week of Ordinary Time (OF) / Feast of St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Pontian (EF)
Greetings GenChrist,
This Sunday evening, our Holy Hour will be in the church at 7:00 p.m. and will be led by Fr. Bill. If you arrive after 7:00 p.m., please use the doors on Kingsley Street. Afterward, we'll move to the parish hall for a pizza social hour. This Sunday, we will be experimenting with a different format for our time of adoration - please feel free to send me, Paula Muldoon or other core team members any feedback afterward.
Advent begins at evening prayer next Saturday night. (What is Advent?) The First Sunday of Advent is the true "New Year's Day" for Christians - as we begin our year with a four week period of preparing our souls for the celebration of Our Lord's nativity.
Consider this week the "New Year's resolutions" you might want to adopt - it makes much more Christian sense to fast during Advent and to celebrate Christmas during Christmas, than to over-indulge at semi-obligatory "holiday parties" throughout December and begin a secular diet on January 1st, right in the middle of Christmastide.
In Christ,
Paul Schultz

Thanksgiving
Next Thursday is, of course, Thanksgiving. As you consider ways to thank God for his blessings, think about going to Mass on that day - the Greek word, Eucharist, means "thanksgiving" and captures many of the idea of superabundance that we associate with this secular feast. (h/t Mark Shea).

St. Thomas Dedication Anniversary
November 26th is the anniversary of the dedication of our church building. Each year, this anniversary is celebrated as a solemnity (i.e., daily Mass with 6 candles, Gloria, etc.). This year, Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving Friday.

Altar Boy Training
To all men of Generation Christ - if you would like to learn how to serve in the sanctuary at the Traditional Latin Mass - please drop a note to Paul Schultz. There will be a training session on November 26th.

First Vespers of Advent
Each Sunday of the church year "begins" with with the praying of Evening Prayer on the prior evening.*
To welcome the New Year, some of us will be getting together on the evening of "Thanksgiving Saturday" to chant the psalms of Evening Prayer I, probably according to the psalms tones in the Mundelein Psalter.
If you want to review a copy of the music in advance, see WorldCAT
(pages: psalms, 600-602; reading & prayers, 57-58; Magnificat, 48)
Audio files of the psalm tones are at Mundelein's Liturgical Institute.
Afterward we'll have a get-together befitting of a Sunday in Advent.
It has recently come to our attention that Pope Benedict will be leading a prayer "Vigil for All Nascent Human Life" in St. Peter's Basilica, and has also encouraged all Diocesan Bishops to lead similar vigils. No information about such a vigil in Ann Arbor has yet come to our attention and we may choose to substitute the prayer intentions prepared by the US bishops for this vigil.
As previously reported, Jacob Rhein (2009 summer custodian at St. Thomas the Apostle) served as one of Pope Benedict's assistants for the First Vespers of Advent last year. Pictures available at: http://www.genchrist.net/info/papal_vespers.html
*with a limited number of exceptions, where a Solemnity falls on a Saturday.

"Whatever you did for the least of my brothers, you did for me."
Represent GenChrist next Sunday, November 28th, at the Robert J. Delonis Center to help cook, serve and clean up following the Sunday meal. Four hours in the kitchen helps to serve over 200 hungry adults and children. GenChrist serves there each month from noon-4:30pm, and you can join us for a single shift (12-2:30 to cook or 2:30-4:30 to serve and clean up) or for the entire afternoon. Please let me know if you are interested. Thank you! ~Mark Meinhart
