Feast of St. Hilary (OF) / Baptism of Our Lord (EF)

Greetings GenChrist,

Our Sunday evening Holy Hours continue this week. Fr. Selvam will lead our meditation in the parish hall, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Beforehand, we'll be watching Catholicism - Episode VI, starting at 5:40 p.m.

The beginning of the new semester is often a time when students and other young people are able to try new things. If you haven't been to GenChrist in a while, or if you have a friend who has never been, please pass the invitation to him or her. Facebook

In Christ,
Paul Schultz

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

In 1908, Anglican clergyman Lewis Wattson proposed the first Christian Unity Octave - 8 days of prayer for the unity of all Christians commencing on January 18th, the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter (until 1960), and concluding on January 25, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul.

Later, he and his monastic community achieved full unity with the Church and he was ordained under his religious name, Fr. Paul Wattson. See the end of today's Update for news about some additional recent successes. Pope Benedict XV approved the unity devotion in 1916 and for a time it was known as the "Chair of Unity Octave." Now it is generally known as the "Week of Prayer for Christian Unity."

Since 1968, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity has jointly prepared Christian Unity Octave materials with the World Council of Churches. This year's materials are available on the Vatican's website or as a pdf on the WCC's website. The theme emphasized in those materials for this year is this sentence fragment taken from Acts 2:42: "One in the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer."

I have been able to find no on-point treatment of the Octave in the Liturgy of the Hours but this Daily Scripture and Prayer Guide is featured on a website administered by Fr. Paul's order.

For those interested, we also have recourse to the devotions / prayers from the older Breviary as well:
January 18th - The union of all Christians in the one true faith and in the Church.
January 19th - The return of separated Eastern Christians to communion with the Holy See.
January 20th - The reconciliation of Anglicans with the Holy See.
January 21st - The reconciliation of European Protestants with the Holy See.
January 22nd - That American Christians become one in union with the Chair of Peter.
January 23rd - The restoration of lapsed Catholics to the sacramental life of the Church.
January 24th - That the Jewish people come into their inheritance in Jesus Christ.
January 25th - The missionary extension of Christ's kingdom throughout the world.

Midweek Social

There should be a evening midweek social at Fr. McGivney House, starting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18th.

For the adventurous: Fr. Jeff will be at the 7:00 p.m. Wednesday night Holy Hour for Lansing's Totus Tuus on January 18th.
@RyanEggenberger and others have been working to encourage the various YA adults to get together, around the state.
Anyone want to make a very long evening of it, go meet TT and invite the Lansingites to attend the upcoming ToT with Fr. Bob Roggenbuck?

Email Paul if this second item / proposal is of any interest to you.

Pictures of Epiphany Mass & Blessing A special thanks, again, to Brendan Dudley for serving as our porter and for Aaron Harburg for serving as our photographer. Thanks to Fr. Bill and Fr. Richard Lobert for the blessings and the Mass.

Pictures of last Friday's Mass and Blessings can be seen: here

If you find any of them beautiful, please consider "sharing" them around facebook or other social media platforms.

February's young adult Mass & Dinner in Detroit will be Thursday, February 2nd - sometimes called "Candlemas," after the items that our blessed on the Feast of Our Lady's Purification. Facebook. Contact Pawel for more information.

March for Life - SFL Trip
Among the trips going to this January's 39th annual March for Life, UofM Students for Life may be willing to have GenChrist members along for the journey.
--The current cost is around $160 (including $50 for the collegiate conference).
--Those GenChrist members who are interested should email Joe.

Tentative Schedule:
--Friday, January 20th: Leave on bus in the evening for D.C. Drive through the night and arrive early in the morning.
--Saturday, Jan. 21st: Free day in D.C.
--Sunday, Jan 22nd: Students for Life of America Conference, which begins with Mass and is open to all. The conference can be fantastic, especially in the area of pro-life apologetics. Or: another free day in D.C. (and would save the $50 registration fee).
--Monday, Jan 23rd: March for Life. As with last year, SFL'll probably try to get ahead of the bulk of the crowd so they can leave early enough to get back before people's classes start on Tuesday.

Victory for Religious Liberty While the facts of the case weren't that pretty, the Supreme Court granted a victory to religious liberty this week, in a case concerning a Detroit area Lutheran church. The winning lawyers - who are the best in the nation, for this type of work - summarized the result here.

In not-completely-related news, St. Thomas parishioner Rob Muise has recently founded the American Freedom Law Center, whose mission is "to fight for ... faith and freedom by advancing and defending America's Judeo-Christian heritage and moral foundation through litigation, education, and public policy programs." Consider "liking" it on facebook, here.
