Advent Penance Service
Advent is a time of preparing our hearts for Christ's second coming as well as for the celebration of His birth. To that end, it is good to examine our consciences and confess our sins to God and to receive absolution from God through His priests.
The priests at St. Thomas are willing to hear confessions after almost every daily Mass or by appointment. In addition, confessions are heard on Saturdays between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Finally, during Advent, the priests in our region team up for mass Penance Services.
The remaining schedule of those services is as follows:
Monday, December 14th, 7:00 p.m. - St. Thomas the Apostle
Tuesday, December 15th, 7:00 p.m. - St. Mary Student Parish
Wednesday, December 16th, 7:00 p.m. - Old St. Patrick
Thursday, December 17th, 7:00 p.m. - St. Francis of Assisi

Five Guys and a Catechism (plus friends)
This Wednesday, December 16th, the Five Guys team will lead a discussion concerning the Incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Ember Day Notice
This coming week, we will have an opportunity to observe the Advent Ember Days - Ember Wednesday (12/16), Ember Friday (12/18) and Ember Saturday (12/19), which the Church assigns to the week after Gaudete Sunday.
For further information, see our previous explanation of Ember Days and Fish Eaters' notes on Advent Embertide.
Please email Paul if you are interested in a communal celebration of one or more of these days of prayer, fasting and abstinence - which would likely take the form of vespers plus a simple supper at FMH.

O Antiphons
To those who pray the Divine Office (now called "the Liturgy of the Hours" in English-speaking lands), the week before Christmas Eve features the O Antiphons. These "Great Antiphons" praise Our Lord and address Him with titles which come from the Old Testament prophets.
In each evening prayer (f/k/a "vespers") of the week, the O Antiphon is the antiphon used before and after the Magnificat, the joyous prayer of Mary upon her visit to her cousin Elizabeth, which is now the joyous prayer of the Church at the beginning of each evening.
If you do not regularly pray evening prayer, perhaps consider praying the O Antiphons and the Magnificat each evening during the final octave before Christmas Eve.
Sheet music and audio files (of the Latin chants) can be found at this page.
